Adult Orthodontics
What is adult orthodontics?
Adult orthodontics refers to the specialised branch of orthodontics that focuses on correcting misaligned teeth and jaws in adults. Unlike children and teenagers, adults seeking orthodontic treatment often have unique considerations, such as existing dental work, periodontal health, and aesthetic concerns.
When is adult orthodontics indicated?
Adult orthodontics may be indicated for various reasons:
- Aesthetics improvement: Many adults seek orthodontic treatment solely for aesthetic purposes, wanting to enhance the appearance of their smile and facial profile.
- Functional improvement: Misaligned teeth can lead to issues such as difficulty chewing, speech problems, and increased risk of dental decay and gum disease. Orthodontic treatment can help improve dental function and overall oral health.
- Multidisciplinary treatment: In some cases, adult orthodontics is part of a comprehensive treatment plan that involves collaboration with other dental specialists (such as prosthodontists, periodontists, or oral surgeons) for smile reconstruction or correction of complex dental issues.
Process of adult orthodontics
The process of adult orthodontic treatment can vary depending on the individual's specific needs and treatment goals:
Step 1 - Initial Consultation:
The journey begins with an initial consultation with Dr Rozanne Opperman, where a comprehensive examination of the teeth, jaws, and facial structure is conducted. Radiographs, photographs, and impressions may be taken to assess the current alignment and position of the teeth.
Step 2 - Collaboration with Other Specialists:
If multidisciplinary treatment is needed, coordination with other dental specialists is crucial. This may involve consultations and joint treatment planning to ensure all aspects of oral health and aesthetics are addressed comprehensively.
Step 3 – Diagnosis and Treatment Planning:
Based on the assessment of clinical findings, orthodontic records, and patient’s goals, a diagnosis is made and a personalised treatment plan developed by Dr Opperman in collaboration with other specialists where indicated. This plan outlines the specific movements needed to achieve optimal alignment and the type of orthodontic appliances (such as traditional braces, clear aligners, or lingual braces) that may be suitable.
Step 4 – Case Discussion:
A case discussion appointment is usually scheduled a week or two following the initial consultation. Dr Opperman will give feedback regarding her findings and present the proposed treatment plan. During this appointment, an estimate of treatment costs and duration will also be reviewed.
Step 5 - Commencement of Treatment:
Treatment will commence once the presented treatment plan is accepted and a bonding appointment is scheduled. Orthodontic brackets are bonded to the outer surface of the teeth during the bonding appointment and tooth movement is initiated when the archwire is inserted into the brackets. If the treatment plan involves using clear aligners, they will be fabricated and fitted for treatment to commence.
Step 6 – Follow-up visits:
Approximately every 4 to 8 weeks, the patient visits the Dr Opperman for adjustments. During these visits, archwires may be replaced or adjusted by the orthodontist to continue guiding the teeth into position. Depending on the specific alignment issues, elastic bands, springs, or other components may be used in conjunction with the braces to facilitate certain tooth movements.
Step 7 - Retention Phase:
Once the teeth have reached their desired positions, the braces are removed. To maintain the corrected tooth positions and prevent relapse, a retainer (either removable or fixed behind the teeth) is typically recommended to be worn for a specified duration. Patients will be referred for additional dental work in cases where collaboration with other specialists are necessary.
Step 8 - Maintenance:
To ensure the stability of the results and address any post-treatment concerns, regular follow-up visits are scheduled. Sustaining oral health and maximising the effectiveness of the treatment requires good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups.
