Clear Aligner Treatment
Overview
Clear aligners are a revolutionary treatment method derived from advanced orthodontic technology designed to straighten and properly align teeth. A series of customised, removable, clear plastic aligners are used, which are changed regularly. The aligners or trays are discreet and a comfortable alternative to traditional braces.
Indications
Although clear aligners cannot be used in all orthodontic cases, they are an excellent option for correcting a variety of dental issues:
- Crowded or misaligned teeth mostly occur when there is insufficient space for all the teeth in the jaw. Crowding may result in poor smile aesthetics and compromise oral health. Clear aligner treatment can effectively address mild to moderate crowding or spacing issues.
- Spaces/gaps between teeth are often associated with missing teeth or teeth which are smaller than average. Clear aligners can be used to close small to moderate gaps between teeth, improving overall dental aesthetics.
- Bite-related issues such as an overbite, underbite, crossbite, deep bite, and open bite can be corrected using clear aligners in most cases.
- Orthodontic relapse may occur after previous orthodontic treatment due to various causes. Clear aligners can be used to address orthodontic relapse by realigning the teeth and restoring aesthetics.
An orthodontic consultation is essential to determine whether clear aligners are suitable for your specific orthodontic needs.
Clear Aligner Process
The process of fitting clear aligners consists of several key steps:
Step 1 - Initial Consultation:
During this visit, Dr Opperman will do a comprehensive oral examination to assess your dental condition, discuss your treatment goals, and determine if clear aligners are suitable for your needs. If treatment is indicated, orthodontic records, which include radiographs, impressions and photographs, will be taken to assist with treatment planning.
Step 2 – Diagnosis and Treatment Planning:
If clear aligner treatment is indicated, Dr Opperman will create a 3D model of your teeth. Specialised software is utilised to plan the exact movements of your teeth during treatment, based on a 3D model, to achieve the best possible alignment.
Step 3 – Case Discussion:
A case discussion appointment is usually scheduled a week or two following the initial consultation. Dr Opperman will give you feedback regarding your case and treatment needs, and an estimate of treatment costs will also be discussed.
Step 4 –Commencement of Treatment:
Aligner fabrication and treatment commences as soon as the patient accepts the treatment plan presented by Dr Opperman. According to the treatment plan, a sequence of custom-made, clear aligners will be created by a specialised aligner laboratory. Each aligner is crafted to apply gentle pressure to targeted teeth, gradually moving them towards their intended position.
Step 5 – Aligner Engagers or attachments:
Engagers, also known as attachments, are small tooth-coloured bumps or ridges made of filling material that is bonded to specific teeth during clear aligner treatment. Engagers are necessary in most cases to assist with ideal tooth movement. They are subtle and match the natural colour of the teeth, reducing their visibility while undergoing treatment. They are completely removed after treatment.
Step 6 – Wearing the Aligners:
After receiving the aligners, you'll be provided with a series of them. Usually, each set is worn for approximately 1-2 weeks before moving on to the next set in the series. Aligners are worn for the majority of the day, usually around 22 hours, removing them only for eating, drinking (except water), brushing, and flossing.
Step 7 – Follow-up visits:
Dr Opperman will arrange regular follow-up appointments to track your progress and ensure that your teeth are aligning as planned. Adjustments may be made as needed to ensure the desired results are achieved.
Step 8 – Refinements:
Refinement aligners are a new series of aligners, usually fabricated during the treatment process. Dr Opperman may request a refinement from the lab to fine-tune the alignment or address any unexpected changes in your treatment progress.
Step 9 - Retention:
Once the desired alignment is achieved, Dr Opperman will prescribe a retainer to maintain the results. Typically worn overnight, retainers help keep teeth in their corrected positions and help prevent them from shifting back.
