Fixed Orthodontic Treatment (Teen Braces)
What is fixed orthodontic treatment (teen braces)?
Fixed orthodontic treatment, commonly referred to as traditional braces or teen braces, utilises brackets bonded to the teeth, connected by archwires and sometimes elastic bands. This treatment is designed to gradually move teeth into their desired positions, correcting misalignment and improving both dental function and aesthetics. Brackets may be made of metal or ceramic, with ceramic brackets being a more aesthetically pleasing option as they blend more naturally with the teeth.
Fixed orthodontic treatment provides a reliable and effective method to achieve a straighter smile and improved dental health. It is a common choice for both adolescents and adults seeking to address orthodontic concerns.
When is fixed orthodontic treatment indicated?
Fixed orthodontic treatment is typically recommended for teenagers and young adults who have dental misalignments such as overcrowded teeth, gaps between teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, or other malocclusions. These conditions can affect oral health, make chewing and speaking difficult, and impact self-confidence due to the appearance of the teeth.
Process of fixed orthodontic treatment
Step 1 - Initial Consultation:
The process begins with a comprehensive examination by your specialist orthodontist, Dr Rozanne Opperman. If treatment is indicated, orthodontic records, which include radiographs, impressions and photographs, may be taken to assist with treatment planning.
Step 2 – Diagnosis and Treatment Planning:
Based on the assessment of clinical findings and orthodontic records, Dr Opperman will diagnose the specific issues and develop a personalised treatment plan. This plan outlines the specific movements needed to achieve optimal alignment and may involve the choice between metal or ceramic brackets based on aesthetic preferences and treatment needs.
Step 3 – Case Discussion:
A case discussion appointment is usually scheduled a week or two following the initial consultation. Dr Opperman will give feedback regarding her findings and present the proposed treatment plan. During this appointment, an estimate of treatment costs and duration will also be reviewed.
Step 4 - Commencement of Treatment:
Treatment will commence once the presented treatment plan is accepted and a bonding appointment is scheduled.
Step 5 – Bonding Appointment:
Brackets will be attached to the front surface of each tooth using dental adhesive. These brackets act as handles to hold the archwires that will guide the movement of the teeth. Once the brackets are in place, an archwire is threaded through them and colourful elastics are used to secure the archwire within the bracket. The archwire is regularly adjusted to gently apply pressure to the teeth, slowly guiding them towards their intended positions.
Step 6 – Follow-up visits:
Approximately every 4 to 8 weeks, the patient visits the Dr Opperman for adjustments. During these visits, archwires may be replaced or adjusted by the orthodontist to continue guiding the teeth into position. Depending on the specific alignment issues, elastic bands, springs, or other components may be used in conjunction with the braces to facilitate certain tooth movements.
Step 7 - Monitoring Progress:
Throughout the treatment, progress is monitored to ensure the teeth are moving according to plan. Adjustments may be made to the treatment plan as needed to achieve the best possible results.
Step 8 - Retention Phase:
Once the teeth have reached their desired positions, the braces are removed. To maintain the corrected tooth positions and prevent relapse, a retainer (either removable or fixed behind the teeth) is typically recommended to be worn for a specified duration.

and orthodontics is the art that helps create the masterpiece.”
